The Guff

Kids These Days

In The Pile on March 25, 2011 at 12:22 am

The BBC recently reported upon a school survey of more than 24,000 children aged 11 to 16 throughout the kingdom. They published the results earlier today. (Although i’m writing this at about midnight so please forgive me for any date/time confusion).

I think the biggest take-aways from the survey are as follows:

  • There really is a rise of secularism within the youth
  • Kids really are ridiculously tech-savy
  • Kids are (thankfully) unaware about the current British economic situation
  • Kids fears are largely influenced by sensationalist media coverage
  • Materialism is safe and sound
  • The Royal Family? Not so much
  • British kids aren’t getting enough exercise or exposure to other ethnic groups

I don’t think this survey tells us anything that armchair pundits hadn’t been guessing for a while. I guess that’s to be expected though when the survey subject is one so close to home.

About the survey
“The survey was carried out in conjunction with the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE) at the University of Plymouth. The online survey was open for six weeks and in that time 24,052 children from more than 300 schools completed up to 29 questions. The average response rate per school was 73, but figures varied widely from 1 to 784.”
